Job Description:
About us

UCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from molecular scale to complex systems.
In this project, metal-organic framework (MOF) technology will be used to produce highly efficient filtration materials for targeted capture and high-volume storage of waste anaesthetic gases; sevoflurane, isoflurane and nitrous oxide. These materials will be incorporated as a filter attached directly to the expiratory limb of the anaesthetic breathing circuit or mouthpiece used for nitrous oxide inhalation. When saturated, stored gases will be removed from the filter, enabling it to be re-used, whilst recaptured waste gases will be made available for re-use or break down to non-toxic constituents.
About the role

This position is within the Computer-aided Materials Discovery Laboratory led by Dr Peyman Z. Moghadam. The project aims at developing MOF materials for the capture of waste anaesthetic agents.
The major duties and responsibilities of the role include:
* To study MOFs for the capture of targeted capture and high-volume storage of waste anaesthetic gases; sevoflurane, isoflurane and nitrous oxide.
* To perform leading research to develop experimental techniques for breakthrough gas adsorption measurements.
* To understand the structure-property relationship of the MOF materials via PXRD, BET and other gas adsorption measurements techniques.
This is a fixed-term role for 6 months (starting 1st of July 2024) in the first instance.
Salary is between £42,099-£45,521 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.
About you

The successful candidate should have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials or Chemistry, experience of MOF materials characterisation techniques and adsorption experiments (breakthrough gas adsorption, PXRD, BET etc.).
Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Our department holds an Athena SWAN Gold award, in recognition of our long-term commitment and ’beacon’ status in advancing gender equality.
