Job Description:
Role Overview

An opportunity exists for an Associate Heritage and Townscape Consultant within the expanding Heritage and Townscape Team at Savills. Although the team operate nationwide, the role in question is based at our Margaret Street office in Central London (with the potential for flexible working). The successful candidate will be part of an outgoing team of 11 proactive consultants whom collectively advise on specialist Heritage, Townscape and Archaeology-related matters associated with the planning process.
The majority of your time will be spent providing ongoing townscape, heritage and visual impact consultancy, working closely with the national Planning Team at Savills and their external clients. Although not essential in this role, there is also an opportunity to secure and service your own external project work, aiding your personal and professional growth. This allows for a balanced individual to slowly develop a client base whilst being fed an ongoing book of internal work by the Heritage and Townscape Team, the Planning Team and the wider Savills business.
Your day to day work will typically include appraising sites; identifying any relevant heritage and townscape context that may be sensitive to development aspirations, and confidently advising clients and project teams on potential considerations (constraints, solutions and opportunities) as part of scheme evolution. Experience advising architects and clients on the suitability of proposals and suggesting scheme amendments where necessary will therefore be key, as will evidence of your negotiation and articulation of schemes in front of decision makers and consultees during the planning application process. The role will also include the preparation of robust Heritage, Townscape and Visual Impact Assessments (HTVIA), specifically those requiring ES chapters as part of EIA and clear evidence of your experience of this is essential to the role. Other tasks will include: conducting site visits and research; preparing briefs for and liaison with visualisers; and taking the lead for HTVIA matters at client, design team and pre-application meetings, amongst others.
The role sits within a collegiate and supportive team at Savills that pride themselves on the quality of their advice and problem solving abilities. It provides an excellent opportunity to be involved in interesting and sometimes challenging consultancy work within London Boroughs, as well as nationwide LPAs. It will involve some national travel and limited overnight stays outside London.
You will report to an Associate Director and a Director and will work alongside other consultants within our team, imparting knowledge and extending your own. You will be supported by experienced members of the team and will be given the opportunity to lead projects. You will be actively encouraged to manage client relationships and continue your personal growth as a consultant.

Key Responsibilities
• Providing consultancy advice to colleagues, clients, planning and design teams
• Briefing and liaising with visualisation specialists in the process of production of AVRs
• Conducting preliminary views studies independently and assessing potential townscape and visual effects using VU.CITY
• Producing HTVIA documents for planning submission, including preparing ES chapters for EIA.
• Attending consultation events related to projects, in particular consultations with Historic England, Local Authority Conservation staff and statutory amenity societies
In addition to the tasks described above, the job holder may be required to carry out other duties as may reasonably be required from time to time.
Key Skills
• Experience in a similar role (5+ years post qualification) in a London-based consultancy (essential)
• Full understanding of the EIA process and experience preparing ES level HTVIAs (essential)
• Detailed knowledge of the planning system in England, including in-depth understanding of the NPPF, planning policy and guidance in relation to heritage and townscape (essential)
• Experience conducting research and identifying key receptors; character areas, viewpoints and heritage significance, as well as defining impacts of proposals on these (essential)
• Excellent report writing and communication skills

Team Overview
Located within Central London, the team’s work is largely in London and the South of England but our expertise is sought on projects across England and by a wide variety of clients, from developers and private residential clients, to government bodies and universities. With team members also situated in Leeds and Wimborne, this offers comprehensive national coverage. The role therefore provides an excellent opportunity to be involved in interesting work in London and other cities, such as Leeds, Birmingham, Southampton, Brighton, Bristol and Manchester. As a team and business we are incredibly proud of our colleagues and want them to be themselves at work, our team believe people who are truly diverse and individual enhance our work, our lived experiences and our team identity and culture.
