Job Overview

We are seeking an inspiring and experienced Head of Computer Science to lead our dynamic department and drive forward the development of the Computer Science curriculum at our school in Houghton Regis. This is an exciting opportunity to take on a senior role within the school and play a pivotal part in shaping the future of digital education for our students.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing the department, ensuring the highest standards of teaching and learning, and fostering a passion for computer science among students. You will work closely with other senior leaders to implement the school’s vision and ethos, and to inspire a new generation of innovators and problem solvers.


Key Responsibilities

* Leadership and Management
*Lead the Computer Science department, overseeing all aspects of the curriculum, assessment, and resources.
*Manage and mentor teaching staff within the department, providing support and professional development opportunities.
*Drive improvements in the quality of teaching and learning in line with school objectives and national standards.
*Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that encourages creativity and innovation among staff and students.

* Curriculum Development
*Design and deliver an engaging and forward-thinking Computer Science curriculum across all key stages (KS3, KS4, KS5), ensuring it is aligned with the latest technological trends and educational standards.
*Develop schemes of work and lesson plans that challenge students and cater to varying abilities, fostering enthusiasm for computing and digital literacy.
*Lead the integration of technology and coding skills across other subjects within the school.

* Student Achievement and Progress
*Set high expectations for student performance, using data to track progress and implement strategies for improvement.
*Support students in achieving excellent results in GCSE and A-Level Computer Science, preparing them for further education and careers in the digital sector.
*Organise extracurricular activities such as coding clubs, competitions, and IT-related projects to enrich students’ experiences.

* Wider School Contribution
*Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on whole-school initiatives, contributing to the school improvement plan and strategic development.
*Ensure the department remains compliant with safeguarding policies and fosters a safe, inclusive learning environment for all students.
*Build strong links with local industry partners, universities, and parents to enhance students’ learning experiences and opportunities.



Person Specification

Essential Criteria:
*Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a degree in Computer Science or a related field.
*Proven experience in teaching Computer Science across different key stages, with a track record of strong student outcomes.
*Leadership experience within an educational setting, with the ability to inspire and manage a team effectively.
*Up-to-date knowledge of the National Curriculum for Computer Science and relevant exam board specifications (GCSE and A-Level).
*Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain high standards.
*Passionate about the role of technology in education, and committed to fostering digital literacy among young people.
Desirable Criteria:
*Previous experience as Head of Department or in a similar leadership role.
*Knowledge of current developments in technology and computer science education.
*Experience in developing cross-curricular links and innovative teaching methods.
*Proficiency in coding languages such as Python, Java, or C++.
