Job Description:
We are seeking a skilled and empathetic tutor with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to support a Year 9 learner in an alternative provision setting. The role involves helping the learner re-engage with education and build the skills necessary to transition back into a school environment.
Key Details:
Location: Spalding, within the home
Duration: Ongoing
Hours: 10 hours per week (2 hours per day, Monday to Friday)
Delivery: In-person tutoring
Responsibilities:
Subject Support: Provide personalised tuition in Maths, English, and PSHE to help the learner catch up on missed education and work towards achieving their goal of gaining GCSEs.
Routine and Structure: Establish and maintain a consistent routine, including the use of a visual timetable, to provide stability and reduce anxiety.
Individualised Approach:
*Use ICT tools and alternative methods such as adult scribing to reduce anxiety about writing.
*Adapt learning tasks to be engaging and manageable, allowing for breaks as needed.
*Provide advance warnings of any changes and support the learner in processing them.
Emotional and Behavioural Support:
*Build trust through patience, consistency, and allowing the learner a sense of control in their learning environment.
*Recognise and address signs of anxiety, helping to prevent and manage escalations into violent behaviour.
*Support the learner in understanding and navigating social rules in a way that feels safe and achievable.
*Motivation and Interests: Incorporate the learner’s interest in music and lyric-writing into sessions to build rapport and make learning more engaging.
Skill Development: Help the learner:
*Improve focus and concentration over time.
*Develop confidence in starting and completing tasks.
*Gradually accept and reflect on constructive feedback with support.**
Learner Profile:
*Diagnosed with SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs), ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), and Anxiety.
*Currently in education but not attending school.
*Working below age expectations and highly anxious about learning, particularly writing tasks.
*Prefers individualised attention and requires a calm, structured approach.
*Struggles with focus, sitting still, and transitioning between activities.
Desired Skills and Attributes:
QTS Certification: Essential for this role.
Experience with SEN and SEMH: Proven ability to work with learners with Autism, Anxiety, and SEMH needs.
Patience and Empathy: Ability to build trust with a learner who has a lack of confidence in adults and a strong need for control.
Adaptability: Skilled in using alternative teaching methods and tools (e.g., ICT and scribing) to accommodate the learner’s needs.
Calm and Consistent Approach: Able to manage challenging behaviours sensitively and maintain a positive learning environment.
