Job Description:
Allen Lane are delighted to be supporting a London Borough Council in their search for Corporate Accountants to join their finance team on a permanent basis.
The Role
The Corporate Accountants play a critical role in supporting the Council’s financial operations, maintaining financial records, and ensuring compliance with local government accounting standards. The Corporate Accountants cover a range of responsibilities, including grants, taxation, collection funds, asset accounting, and finance systems management.
Key Responsibilities for roles include but are not limited to:
*Maintain and monitor the grant register and related balance sheet accounts.
*Provide technical support during year-end processes, ensuring accurate financial reporting for all grant-related activities.
*Support the Revenues team and the finance lead for the Medium Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) in monitoring the Collection Fund.
*Assist in the budget setting process for the Council’s Collection Fund and ensure that relevant reconciliations are completed.
*Maintain and reconcile the Asset Register, ensuring accuracy in recording capital transactions.
*Collaborate with Capital Business Partners to review capital entries and ensure they are accounted for correctly.
*Account for leases, ensuring compliance with financial regulations and accurate reporting.
*Oversee the management of financial systems hierarchies, ensuring smooth operations of accounts, monitoring documents, and forecasting tools.
*Work with the finance team to ensure budgets are raised in advance of the financial year, and that the system integrates effectively with corporate finance functions.
*Review and ensure accurate calculation and record-keeping for VAT, CIS, Corporation Tax, and Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT).
*Monitor and report quarterly on tax compliance and work closely with the Section 151 Officer or their deputy to highlight and mitigate any risks.
Key Requirements:
*Qualified or studying towards a professional accounting qualification (CIPFA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
*Strong understanding of local government accounting practices and regulations.
*Strong understanding of statutory returns, budget setting, and year-end processes.
